Thank you Washtenaw County!
Although the summer of 2016 was definitely a scorcher, approximately 500 youth ages 5-12 stayed very cool – making art at the Ann Arbor Art Center during 10 week-long art camp extravaganzas. 2016 hosted sold-out Clay Camps and 90% overall camp enrollment!
Each week of camp had a unique theme and youth had the opportunity to meet creative professionals who make their living through the visual arts related to that theme. Guests this summer included: Monsters, Myths and Magical Creatures, with David Zinn; Wonderful World of Design with Toyota’s Calty Design staff; and Food for Thought with Zingerman’s Graphic Artist Anne Kellogg.
This year also featured a new project for our youth: Random Acts of Art. During one Random Act of Art, each child selected their favorite children’s book and created a unique bookmark with their design and a note, “Compliments of the Ann Arbor Art Center” written on the back. They took their bookmarks along with them on a field trip to the District Library where they placed the bookmarks inside their favorite books – as a surprise gift to the next eager reader who selects their book!
