Janelle Smith is an artist living and working in southeast Michigan. She received her BFA from Eastern Michigan University in 2018.
Artist Statement: This body of work is mostly based around the concepts of repetition in nature and everyday life. The smaller more intricate mosaic-like pieces are all hand-cut and no two are the same. Based in-process these works are about time, practice, and pattern. These are meditations on the form, and explore a more sculptural object-based approach to painting. Similarly, the works without texture utilize some of the same visual elements which create connective tissue within a greater body of work exploring the need for comfort and consistency as much as variation in the natural world.
