Hayley Hungerford will be creating a live floral installation on the first floor of our gallery during the opening party for RINSE/REPEAT. Join us on Friday, August 17 from 6pm-9pm to see it!
Hungerford graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design with her BFA in Illustration. Since devoting many years studying botanical illustration, she has more recently found herself experimenting with photography and focusing on the practice of floral design in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Deeply inspired by earth artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson, Hungerford often turns to nature as her guide in creating what she refers to as “Floral Mandalas.” A mandala is an enclosed circle, instilled with spiritual meaning that serves as a representation of the universe. Traditionally, when constructing a mandala, it is believed one transmits positive energies to their environment and all those who are blessed with the opportunity to view them while they last. Hungerford creates this type of ephemeral art to discover ease through meditation, to find grace in a holy practice, and to cherish a process she loves with knowledge that the outcome is fleeting.
