ABOUT THE RECONSTRUCTION

In 2019, the Notre-Dame Cathedral burned.

In 2021, Handshouse Studio led a team of experts, historians, architects, and students to accurately reconstruct one of the timber trusses that once supported the roof of Notre Dame as a global gesture of solidarity among makers. The Handshouse Studio Notre Dame Project used the official drawings created and shared with us by French lead architect Rémi Fromont to reconstruct a full-scale replica of Choir Truss #6 of Notre Dame de Paris, following historical French timber harvesting, fabricating, assembly, tools, and raising techniques passed down to us from the Middle Ages!

As a result of this international collaboration, Handshouse representatives were invited to France to work on the official reconstruction of Notre-Dame’s timber roof in France! The Notre Dame Project replica of Truss #6 is currently in Michigan. Timber Framers from all over the US will be coming to Michigan for the Timber Framers Guild Conference this October. The talented American carpenters who worked on the restoration of Notre Dame in France will all be together for the first time in Ann Arbor, and we want to take the opportunity to celebrate their historic work with the world by hand-raising our full-scale replica Notre Dame Truss in the streets of Ann Arbor and offering a panel discussion for the public with project participants on Oct. 17.
