Artist Statement

Human migration, social in/visibility, the intrinsic nature of human-to-human relationships, our desensitized relationship to the universe — this is where Paloma Núñez-Regueiro work finds refuge. Ink and paper tell stories of impermanence and of the experiences of living in far away foreign places. She deals with the overarching subject of starting over with whatever is at hand, and of the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. Her artwork is her ritual to make herself fit into oftentimes unwelcoming worlds that she seldom feels that she belongs to. Touching a gouge to a plate, she strives to help other rootless ones like herself, and those the world deems invisible, find their place too.

Counted/Uncounted is a project based on visibility and awareness of minorities’ issues. It proposes a shift in mindset that will cause the viewer to recognize that we minorities deserve respect and admiration. This recognition has the potential to be translated into real support and real positive outcomes for minorities that share community with us.

Counted/Uncounted also focuses on the strength and resilience of immigrants, BIPOC, the LGBTQ+ community, and disabled people. This ongoing project promotes a culture of healing, safety, empowerment, and awareness of minorities’ issues, which is so needed in these times.

This project is supported in part by The City of Ann Arbor ARPA Arts + Creative Initiative For Youth, BIPOC, and Marginalized Population Fund, Creative Washtenaw, Culture Source, and CultureVerse.
