ART NOW: DRAWING is the fourth annual exhibition in the Ann Arbor Art Center’s Art Now Series. Each year, on a rotating basis, the AAAC presents a media-focused exhibition as part of the series. We are pleased to present this year’s exhibit which features innovative work in drawing.
While some artists are heavily based in traditional modalities of drawing, using drawing in preparatory ways, other artists will test the limits of what defines a “drawing” and push beyond the conventional boundaries, allowing for hybrid processes to be employed and combined. The use of such advances include, digital imaging, sculpture, performance, video, installation, painting and printmaking.
This exhibition highlights artists that employ traditional drawing processes, as well as artists who move across disciplines, using “drawing” as their foundation, with an emphasis on investigative and exploratory ways of drawing.

About the Juror: Perry Kulper
Perry Kulper is an architect and Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan. In a prior life he was a 17 year SCI-Arc faculty member and held visiting teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Arizona State University. His interests include the generative potential of architectural drawing, the outrageously different spatial opportunities of diverse design methods and in broadening the conceptual range by which architecture contributes to our cultural imagination. He has recently published Pamphlet Architecture 34, ‘Fathoming the Unfathomable: Archival Ghosts and Paradoxical Shadows’ with Nat Chard. They are at work on a new book to be published by Routledge.

His work is a radically different synthetic operation than assemblage – his works are drawn in a mixed language hybridizing the two traits of analytical drawing & descriptive geometry with the distinctly separate traits of episodic vignettes & nonchalant doodling into a new species of visionary architecture, which when drawn appear like episodes from a single vast mechanized daydream.”
