About Teen Art Camps

Our Teen Art Camps offer an enriching balance of creativity and skill-building art educational experiences for beginner and aspiring teen artists. Throughout the week, campers dive into exciting projects that ignite imaginations and hone creative expressions within the designated camp theme. Experienced instructors will guide teen campers in traditional art instruction and encourage campers to channel their newfound skills into their personal art practice and creative expressions.

  • This program is for teens ages 13-17 years old. *Please note: We do not make exceptions to the minimum age required to be in a given group.
  • Camps run Monday thru Friday, from 9am – 4pm

Tuition: $425/week

*The A2AC reserves the right to cancel a teen camp due to insufficient enrollment. In the event of a cancellation due to low enrollment, parents/guardians will be notified no later than 1 week before the start of the camp week.


TEEN ART CAMP THEMES

Digital Character Design & Worldbuilding

July 8 – July 12

Cut loose your imagination and join us for an exciting digital character design & worldbuilding camp! Using digital mediums, teen campers will explore the fundamentals of art and design to design their own fantasy worlds and characters.

Teen campers are encouraged to pursue designing a world based on their personal interests, such as create concept art for a video game, board game, graphic novel, dungeons and dragons scene, or illustration project. Teen campers will:

  • Learn how to use an iPad, apple pencil, and the Procreate app.
  • Explore map making, architecture, natural elements, and props.

Oil Painting

July 22 – July 26

Discover the essence of traditional oil painting techniques through the dynamic world of water-based oils! In this camp week, teens will learn fundamental oil painting techniques such as how to use light, shadow, and color to create a short series of work.

Guided by an experienced instructor, participants will receive hands-on demonstrations, personalized feedback, and expert guidance as they unlock the potential of this versatile medium. Teen campers will:

  • Learn to create underpaintings, practice mixing colors, and develop a final artwork.
  • Engage in daily explorations of renowned oil painters’ works to glean insights into the nuances of their styles and approaches, inspiring possibilities for emulation in their own artistic explorations.

Figure Drawing

July 29 – August 2

Delve into the challenge of capturing the human form and develop observational skills using live clothed models, reference photos, and mirrors!

Utilizing a variety of mediums and techniques, teen campers will learn the principles of contour, value, perspective, and composition. This is a great class for developing a portfolio as well as your personal artistic style.

Teen campers will:

  • Learn about and practice replicating the proportions of the human face and body.
  • Explore the relationship between perspective and foreshortening.

Basics of Portfolio Building

August 5 – August 9

Delve into the fundamentals of building captivating portfolios through immersive exploration and hands-on practice in a variety of mediums and techniques. This camp is designed to equip teens with essential skills in traditional portfolio development and how they can apply them to their unique artistic expressions.

Guided by an experienced instructor, campers will:

  • Develop technical skills in a variety of 2-D mediums such as charcoal, graphite, and acrylic paint.
  • Explore the detailed world of observational drawing to create a thoughtfully rendered still life.
  • Showcase technical ability and storytelling skills to create a work of art with personal significance or meaning.

What days and times do the camps run?

We offer full-day camps. All camps run from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.

What times are drop-off and pick-up?

Morning drop-off is from 8:45 am – 9:00 am.

Afternoon pick-up is from 4:00 pm – 4:15 pm.

Can teens have the option to walk, bike, and sign themself into camp?

Yes. The Medical/Release Form will list an option whereby you may give permission for your teen to arrive and sign themself into camp independently. Teens may not sign themselves out of camp until 4:00pm, unless communicated to the A2AC a parent/guardian contacts us.

Parents will also have the option of selecting to be responsible for signing their teen in and out of camp.

What do the teens need to bring to camp?

  • Wear old clothes & old shoes that can get dirty. Many art materials do not wash out of clothes.
  • Shoes must be closed-toed. No flip-flops, sandals, etc.
  • A labeled water bottle with their name clearly marked.
  • The A2AC requests that all packed lunches be nut-free. Please note that microwave and refrigerator facilities are not available.
  • Teens may bring 1-2 snacks, but are not required to.
  • Sunscreen in the event class goes outside for an activity. Sunscreen application is encouraged before arriving to camp.

What COVID-19 policies and procedures will be in place this summer?

Please have your teen stay at home if they are feeling ill, have a fever, or have vomited within the last 24 hours.

The A2AC follows all CDC Guidelines as it pertains to Covid-19

*Please note: masks will be required if the Covid-19 Hospital-Admissions Level is ever High/Orange in Washtenaw County.

The A2AC reserves the right to update our policies at any time during the term in response to changing circumstances.

When will I receive an e-mail containing the Teen Art Camps Handbook and Medical Form?

Families will be sent an e-mail containing the Teen Art Camps Handbook and the Teen Art Camps Medical Form 3 weeks before the start of the camp week.

If your teen is enrolled in multiple camp weeks, you will receive an email for each week they are attending. Please review each email carefully, as it may contain essential information tailored to that specific camp week.

Notes:

Only one medical form is required per participant, which we will retain on file throughout the summer. There’s no need to complete additional forms for subsequent weeks of camp.

How big are the camp groups?

Each camp week can accommodate 8 teens with 1 instructor.

When is the lunch time? Does my child need to bring a lunch?

Lunchtime is from 12:00pm-1:00pm. Teens will need to bring a nut-free/peanut-free lunch. No refrigerator or microwave is available.

Teens are welcome to bring 1-2 snacks if they would like, but it is not required.

Do teens go outside at all during the day?

Teens do not go to the nearby Montessori School Play Yard, like our Youth Art Camp does. The instructor will provide short breaks during the day. Per the instructor, teens may occasionally take a break to view artwork in the Gallery Shop, Spotlight Gallery, Exhibitions Gallery, or Aquarium Gallery.

At the discretion of the Camp Director and Instructor, teens may also engage in outdoor activities within the nearby area.
