Choose from two different DIY inspired lighting projects to add a unique element to your home decor. Investigate the elements of design and use a little creative ingenuity to create a puzzle piece pendant light or a custom cylinder table lamp. The finished product from this fun workshop should satisfy both your outer hipster and your inner crafter.

This fun family workshop begins by scouring the museum with a list of clues to unearth the amazing animals and mythical creatures lurking in paintings and sculptures throughout the collections. Finish off the hunt by creating an animal mask or clay creature inspired by your favorite beast and talking about your exciting discoveries. All materials included.
Join Pam Miley for the afternoon & learn about this beautiful Eastern European tradition. Using a wax resist technique & layers of colored dye participants will each create a gorgeous egg of their own to take home. Since burning candles will be used, students under the age of 8 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Working from a dark background, you learn the emotive impact of using the richly colored direct drawing medium of soft pastel. Explore the basics of using pastels while learning to create contrasts of value to suggest light, shadow and volume. The workshop begins with a small tour of still life paintings at the museum and your creations will be inspired by two very different pieces from the collection, Vanitas Still Life by Willem Hedas or Northern Summer Window by Marsden Hartley. All materials included.

These wines are unique, the quality is enticing, and the price-quality ratio exceptional. Explore Argentine specialties Bonarda, Malbec, and Torrontes; Chile's Carmenere; Peru's Pisco; and Uruguay's Tannat. Plus outstanding examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Tempranillo. Chile's Bordeaux vines are planted on their original rootstocks, offering a unique take on pre-phylloxera claret. In addition to the main theme, Mr. Scheer advises on the subjects of Wine Storage, and Wine Service at home and in restaurants.
Learn basic dyeing techniques using pre-mixed Procion H dyes. Patterns and color depth are explored by using various folding and tying methods prior to applying dye. You transform blank white scarves into one-of-a-kind wearables. Using vinegar as the chemical activator and a microwave, scarves are heat-set and ready-to-wear at the end of class! Each student will dye two scarves. (All levels welcome)
You learn the shibori pole wrapping technique "arashi" by using wine bottles. Blank white scarves are wrapped and tied around bottles prior to dyeing. You explore pattern layering and color depth by wrapping and dyeing the scarf multiple times. Pre-mixed Procion H dyes are used with vinegar as the chemical activator and heat-set in a microwave. You dye one 22" x 72" - great as a shawl, belt or twisted neck scarf.
Claude Monet called color his "day-long obsession, joy, and torment." It surrounds us, attracts us, and illuminates our perception. So take a break from the gray winter to spend a day absorbed in the dynamic properties of color. We will do exercises to explore color theory as a communicative device, as a perceptual phenomenon, and as physical material (color mixing). This workshop is primarily 2-D although it is open to all media and geared towards students with previous knowledge and/or experience.
Have you ever wondered where realism ends and abstraction begins? This workshop is an introduction to various philosophical and aesthetic approaches to abstraction. We will build on historical precedent and use our perception, imagination, and design sense to create unique abstract work. Emphasis is on individual voice and development. This workshop is open to all 2-D media and geared towards students with previous knowledge and/or experience. (One hour lunch break)
