Exhibiting Artists: Emily Duke, Shaina Kasztelan, Janice Pollizin Ken Shenstone, Travis Taylor, Alex Thullen, Elizabeth Youngblood, Joe Zajac
Curator: Tom Phardel
The group of exhibiting artists is anchored by two seasoned veterans who practice contrasting approaches to a ceramic surface: Joe Zajac whose glass- like perfected studies in color quietly challenge the eye, and Ken Shenstone’s whose surfaces are at times a chaotic accumulation of 8 to 9 days of deposited molten wood ash from his Anagama kiln. The outcome of Shenstone’s work is evidence of the dance between the artist and the firing process.
The six other ceramic artists included in this exhibition are up and coming “artists to watch” who are continually pushing the boundaries outwards. Each artist has cut their own distinctive path into an ever-expanding contemporary ceramic vocabulary. Their works will clearly demonstrate the rich vitality of clay today.
This activity is supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
